Background
IBTI is a product development partnership consisting of leading industries, government departments and research councils. IBTI will define the research and development and demonstration needs of biorefineries for industrial production. The integrated production of chemicals, materials, energy and transportation fuels will be essential to establish a competitive bioeconomy where renewable feedstocks provide a significant proportion of our industrial raw materials.
A facilitated network of industrial and government stakeholders working across the whole biorefining supply chain will underpin progress in developing a competitive UK bioeconomy which will be a key to sustainable industrial production and economic growth in the coming century.

| |
IBTI is seeking to engage with UK and international companies to develop renewable feedstocks and biorefining technologies for the production of chemicals, materials and fuels |
IBTI is applying a £multi-million budget to fund R&D. A mixture of BBSRC funds and company contributions will provide around £5 million to support a strategic R&D programme in biorefining research (the IBTI Club). An industry-led Strategy Board will provide strategic direction to the initiative. This will ensure future market relevance of the IBTI programme and establish a pathway to mature from R&D through to demonstration and deployment. |

Operation:
Activity 1: A strategic research programme An industry-guided research programme with bi-annual dissemination meetings to ensure members are informed of research outputs. This forum will provide opportunities for early engagement with UK academics to establish close working relationships for future collaborative ventures.
Activity 2: Demonstration Projects Industry and government departments will fund demonstration projects as proof-of-concept. Projects will vary in size and extent of private/public investment according to the specific needs of individual companies/consortia.
Activity 3: A facilitated network The IBTI Industrial Strategy Board is an influential group of experts with knowledge across the entire biorefining supply chain. Importantly, this includes both the energy and non-energy sectors to ensure commercial potential is maximised through the integrated production of bioenergy, biochemical and biomaterial products.
